I was working at a data science startup when an engineering colleague tried to tell me a joke. The joke said “Wouldn’t it be great if gay people couldn’t use the same stores or banks as anyone else? Then the economy would boom because there would be twice as many stores!”
The colleague literally thought that I didn’t understand humor and kept trying to reexplain it.
I told him that the only thing poorer than his taste was his understanding of economics.
When I approached the female eng manager she told me “suck it up and get used to it” and that she’d “heard so much worse.”
This engineer was also known for loudly watching TV shows in the office while his code compiled, and when the manager called me six months later asking me to give him a positive review so he would not be PIPed, I refused.
He is still there, and now in a senior role.
